Whois 142.250.171.66 shows that IP is one of Google's (probably their Loudoun County datacenter) Just something like a loose connection trigger by the wind blowing, or water infiltration shorting out a connection. In my 20 years of IT, it was always those types of problems that were hardest to pin down.īasically, my gut feeling (without a deeper understanding of their infrastructure or eyes on the issue) is that there is a last mile physical issue. If it is something physical, and the conditions for it are not occurring then testing and inspecting won't help. It is really the intermittent nature of the problem that I imagine is causing the difficulty finding it. At least in typical isp network configs, I have no idea how they actually do things at RCN. Honestly I am racking my brain for any type of configuration error that could cause intermittent issues and havent thought of many I would find likely that affect only you. Nope, configuration error would be on their side, your side of it would likely have been corrected by switching modems, and also in that case would mostly be a not working at all problem. And, if that ever happens, I'll be sure to post another update here ASAP for those suffering from the same problems. Maybe, eventually, I'll be connected with someone who can help. I don't know if the second complaint will get results, but I want to make sure I exhaust all of my options. So, I filed a second FCC complaint and included all of this new information. I contacted RCN's corporate office to follow up, and they said they also couldn't reach him (their own employee!) and there was nothing else they could do. I tried emailing Scott for a month, but he never replied. They said he would work with me to identify and correct the problem. That got the attention of RCN's corporate office, who called and gave me the email address for a network engineer named Scott. And, after that, Greg, the supervisor, stopped returning my calls. Of course that didn't do anything, just put me back to square one. That tech said the issue was the filter on my modem and took it off (lol!). That didn't solve the problem, so Greg sent another tech. He sent a tech who said the issue was my upload signal strength and put a filter on my modem to fix it. In other words, it's not a hardware issue on my end.įinally, RCN escalated the issue to a "network supervisor" named Greg. And, I've gone through three, hardwired PCs during this time. They drilled a hole in my floor to run a direct line to my modem, bypassing any potentially bad wiring in my house. At their recommendation, I replaced my modem (three times) and my router (twice). High-quality video buffers or downgrades to SD, video calls freeze or drop, and gaming is out of the question - things just jump around the screen. My connection is awful with huge latency spikes every few seconds. (TL DR - The problem still isn't fixed, RCN is embarrassingly unprofessional, and I'm still working with the FCC)įirst, some quick background: In my neighborhood, RCN (now called "Astound Powered by RCN") is the only option for broadband internet.
